Customer Review: A few changes away from greatness

I purchased the Hello Kitty Pink Spill Resistant USB Keyboard for a colleague of mine. After trying it for a few minutes, he expressed his displeasure and abandoned it. Curious, I picked it up and gave it a go.
My first impression was that the keyboard had a decent weight and action to the keys, although the space bar did require a little more force than I would like. Upon further use, I realized how this keyboard was flawed and it ultimately would not serve my needs.
The problems both come from an unfortunate choice of keys and key layout.
1) In the attempt to squeeze in as many keys as possible, the makers decided to repeat the \| key and place it to the left of the space bar. This required them to reduce the sizes of the control, windows, and alt keys. For a programmer, this is a very poor choice. I would have preferred that they not cram in another key in this space. A larger alt key would have been ideal (since I routinely swap the control and caps lock functionality, I don't mind if the control key is small). Also, the \| key seems like an odd choice at any rate. This point (poor choice in keys) repeats itself in the next item.
2) In an attempt to fit the "home" key along the right edge of the main key region, the backspace key was shortened too much for my taste. I find the three keys I use the most are the space bar, return key, and baskspace key. As such, I like having them substantially larger than the other keys. One change the manufacturer could have made was to move the backspace key up one row and swap it with the pause/break key. This would require that they eliminate the wake up key as well, but that would be a small price to pay (most computers wake up when any key is pressed, so this key seems rather useless to me).
I'm actually a very disappointed by these flaws, since I like the feel of the keyboard and the functionality of the multimedia keys. However, the defects listed above prevent this keyboard from meeting my day-to-day needs.
